Lightweight cladding has become a popular choice in housing construction. Attached to the exterior of the home, lightweight cladding is a non-load-bearing skin or layer. It not only adds to the aesthetic of the house but also provides a waterproof layer to the home, is eco-friendly and provides protection from the elements, sound and thermal insulation and fire resistance.
The Different Types of Cladding
Lightweight cladding can be made from timber, plywood sheeting, aluminium, composite materials, vinyl or fibre cement.
Timber
Timber cladding offers a classic natural aesthetic but may require more maintenance. It’s durable and unlikely to become damaged, with some species used for their weathering properties. With minimal effort to install compared to other cladding options, timber is a cost-effective solution.
Aluminium
Aluminium cladding is known for its lightweight yet strong qualities, corrosion resistance and design flexibility. It’s low maintenance and recyclable, making it an appealing choice for eco-conscious projects.
Composite Materials
Composite cladding is made from a blend of wood fibres and plastic. It’s less prone to fading and staining, making it suitable for areas with high exposure to the elements and doesn’t require frequent painting or sealing.
Vinyl
Vinyl cladding is made primarily from PVC. While it has good weather resistance under standard conditions, it can be vulnerable in extreme weather such as severe hail. It’s low maintenance – only requiring basic cleaning without the need for repainting or resealing.

Fibre Cement
Fibre cement cladding is made from a mix of sand, cement and cellulose fibres. It’s stable and durable with high levels of resistance to fire, rot and termites. It’s versatile for different applied finishes.
Plywood Sheeting
Plywood sheeting is made from thin layers of softwood wood species which are bonded together using strong, water resistant or marine-grade synthetic phenolic resin. Plywood sheeting is durable and is resistant to impact, moisture and temperature changes. It’s a cost effective and eco-friendly option.
With its strong visual appeal, ease of installation and beneficial properties, lightweight cladding is a favourable choice when it comes to home exterior design.
