Form is an important principle of design and when used effectively can create a unique, functional and aesthetically pleasing space.
What is form?
Form refers to the shape, structure and visual appearance of a room and the objects within that room. Put simply, form is how something looks in three dimensions. Form can be geometric or natural.
Natural form refers to organic forms that appear to be created by nature. They are often flowing and irregular in shape and lend themselves to a more relaxed and softer design.
Geometric form refers to square edges and hard lines and generally appear man-made. These forms are best used for modern or minimalist layouts.
How to use form in your home
When utilising form there are many factors to be considered. The scale and proportions of the room compared to the objects being placed in the room is important as is the function and purpose of each room. The overall look you want to achieve also needs to be considered.
If you’re looking for a more contemporary style, then the use of geometric form will achieve this. A more calming space can be achieved by using objects that have a natural form. Adding similarly shaped forms can create balance and harmony while adding too many different shapes can create a confusing effect.
Form isn’t limited to a room’s shape or the furniture you choose. Form can be incorporated through the use of decorative items such as mirrors, vases, sculptures, plants etc.
By carefully considering and choosing different forms, you can create a space that is not only visually appealing but also practical and comfortable.
