Emphasis is the creation of a focal point that captures attention in a room or space. It attracts focus and gives the eye a place to rest. It’s achieved by highlighting a specific area or object and can be subtle or bold.

How to use emphasis in your home
Emphasis or focal points can be created in a number of ways by using:
- Furniture
- Artwork
- Architectural features such as a fireplace
- Light fixtures
- Feature walls
- Colour and contrast
When using furniture to create a focal point it needs to support the function of the room. For example, the focal point of the bedroom should be the bed; the focal point of a lounge room should be the couch.
If using lighting to create emphasis, using dramatic fixtures such as chandeliers or pendant lights can give the right effect.
Colour and contrast can be used by placing a couch in a bold colour against a wall painted in a neutral colour.
Large-scale artwork or a gallery wall can serve as a striking focal point, as can architectural features such as fireplaces, exposed beams, or expansive windows.
The key to using emphasis effectively is to establish the focal point first and then structure the rest of the design around it ensuring the other elements complement the focal point and don’t compete with it.
The use of emphasis not only ensures that a space looks appealing but that it also feels purposeful and well balanced, creating harmony and an engaging environment.
