Shower seats have become popular bathroom additions. Shower seats are often installed for comfort, accessibility or convenience.
Traditionally, shower seats were used to help those with mobility issues shower with ease or to provide a safe option when showering for those recovering from injury or illness.
Today, the shower seat is often included in the shower’s design to provide a luxurious spa-like feel or a storage option – allowing you to place toiletries and other bathroom accessories on them.
Shower Seat Designs
Shower seats can be built-in or removable and may depend on the following factors:
- The space available in the shower
- The purpose and function of the shower seat
- The style of the shower
- Whether you’re renovating your shower or you are working with an existing shower
Built-in or Integrated Shower Seats
Built-in or integrated shower seats are best installed when building or renovating a bathroom. Part of the shower’s design, the shower seat needs to be properly installed and waterproofed, if they are tiled.
Bigger showers lend themselves to larger bench-style seating. For smaller showers, corner shower seats work well without taking up too much space.
If the purpose of the shower seat is for accessibility and space is an issue, there are folding seats available that can be mounted to the shower wall. These easily fold up or down when required.
Removable Shower Seats
If installing in an existing shower space, then removable options are a great alternative. A free-standing timber bench can be a great addition to your shower while smaller timber stools are a great option for small showers.
Shower chairs for those requiring seating to assist with accessibility are just like a regular chair but with holes to let water drain and arm rests that double as grab bars to aid with sitting and standing. These are lightweight and can easily be moved in or out of the shower as required.
Installing a shower seat in your shower can increase accessibility and practicality as well as add a stylish element to your bathroom.
